In-depth Appreciation of The World's No.1 – Niagara Falls

By Zhao Siwen (Disciple of Li Kuchan and Wang Xuetao)

I. Academic Value

Mr. Zhao Siwen studied under the masters Li Kuchan and Wang Xuetao, inheriting the profound essence of the da xieyi (freehand brushwork) tradition. This painting, Niagara Falls, is the very first grand work in the history of Chinese painting to depict, in a panoramic composition, this world-class natural wonder of Canada. It therefore holds a unique academic position. By merging the expressive techniques of Chinese da xieyi with the Western natural landscape, Zhao has achieved a successful dialogue between Eastern and Western painting.

Brushwork: The waterfall is rendered with bold, expressive ink techniques, its torrents cascading with immense force. Layers of wet and dry ink are interwoven, preserving the poetic spirit of traditional Chinese landscapes while also presenting the grandeur of a Western natural spectacle.
Composition: The panoramic arrangement integrates both the “scattered perspective” of Chinese painting and the “distant realism” of Western art. The inclusion of railings, boats, and bridges brings contemporaneity to the work, while retaining the vast and magnificent spirit of Chinese painting.
Scholarly Breakthrough: This piece expands the thematic boundaries of da xieyi painting, grafting the spiritual essence of Chinese brushwork onto an internationally renowned natural landscape. It thus represents an important academic exploration.

II. Artistic Value

Majestic Nature: The torrents plunge downward with unstoppable momentum; ink and color blend into a vast spectacle—a true portrayal of the grandeur worthy of being called “The World’s No.1.”
East-West Fusion: The painting combines Western elements such as buildings, ships, and national flags with the freehand rendering of mountains and forests. The interplay of the real and the abstract, realism and expressionism, creates a new artistic realm of “cross-cultural da xieyi.”
Spiritual Expression: With profound brushwork, the artist conveys reverence and love for nature. At the same time, art is employed as a bridge to symbolize the friendship and cultural exchange among the peoples of China, the United States, and Canada, revealing the broad-mindedness of a Chinese artist embracing the world.

III. Collectible Value

Rarity of Subject: It is extremely rare for da xieyi painting to depict overseas natural wonders. This panoramic work, themed on Niagara Falls, stands out for its uniqueness and scholarly significance.
Historical Mark: The inscription clearly notes “2016: Year of China–Canada Cultural Exchange,” making the painting not only an artwork but also a historical testimony—endowed with both artistic and cultural significance.
Artistic Achievement: The three red seals—“Zhao,” “Siwen,” and the “Maple Leaf”—symbolize the painter’s personal identity as well as his cultural bond with Canada. These greatly enhance its value as a collectible and cultural artifact.
International Relevance: The work can be integrated into the canon of Chinese painting while also carrying cross-national cultural exchange value, holding great potential in the international art market.

IV. Spiritual and Cultural Implications

Hymn to Nature: The ceaselessly surging waterfalls symbolize the eternal cycle of life and the immense power of nature.
Humanistic Reflection: The depiction of bridges, ships, and buildings suggests humanity’s participation and coexistence with nature, embodying a philosophy of harmony between man and the natural world.
Cross-Cultural Mission: The artist not only reproduces a natural wonder but also conveys friendship through his work. By merging the spirit of Chinese art with the natural landscapes of America and Canada, the painting symbolizes the deep and enduring friendship among the three nations.
Global Significance: This masterpiece transcends the boundaries of region, culture, and language. It exemplifies the noble ideal of “art without borders,” showing art as a universal language that unites people of different cultures in shared aesthetic appreciation and emotional resonance.

V. On-site Sketching and Creative Process

It is worth emphasizing that Mr. Zhao Siwen did not conceive this work in imagination alone, but carried out on-site sketching at Niagara Falls.

·

He repeatedly paused at the edge of the falls, braving mist and chill, sketching the ever-changing torrents and shifting clouds.

·

·

Boarding the sightseeing boat, he ventured close into the roaring mist, experiencing the overwhelming force at first hand and engraving that awe into his heart.

·

·

On the observation deck, he carefully sketched railings, birds, and bridges, gathering essential details for the final panoramic composition.

·

This “immersive, brush-guided-by-the-heart” sketching method infused the painting with authentic vitality. Every brushstroke carries lived experience, making Niagara Falls not just an artistic creation but also a heartfelt dialogue between the painter and nature itself.

VI. Conclusion

Niagara Falls is a panoramic masterpiece that unites academic innovation, artistic grandeur, cultural exchange, and collectible value. It is not only a hymn to the magnificence of nature, but also a celebration of Sino–U.S.–Canadian friendship and international cultural exchange.

The painting continues the vigorous brushwork tradition of Li Kuchan’s lineage while boldly opening new thematic territory for da xieyi. More importantly, this full panoramic portrayal of Niagara Falls represents a historic breakthrough in the history of painting. At the same time, it carries, in the name of art, the aspirations for friendship among China, the United States, and Canada, and the ideal of world peace.

Through his selfless artistic endeavor, Zhao Siwen advances intercultural exchange among the three nations, building with his brush a bridge of friendship across borders. His direct experience of on-site sketching endows this work with vivid vitality and irreplaceable originality.

This painting can rightly be called a dual monument in both art history and cultural exchange, and a paradigm of cross-cultural development in the china da xieyi tradition of Chinese painting.
